Audits are used to protect Oracle\u2019s intellectual property. Licensing agreements generally contain a clause granting the right to conduct an audit of a user to ascertain whether the company has properly licensed all of the software that it is using.<\/p>\n

This may lead to substantial payments of arrears due to software providers. Oracle conducts audits (referred to by Oracle as Oracle License Reviews) itself as well as in collaboration with various partner companies who distribute Oracle software and are known as LMS partners. Oracle uses the name LMS (License Management Service) to refer to the internal team tasked with conducting these audits. The partner strategy has enabled the software provider to significantly increase the number of audits it previously carried out. According to data from Oracle LMS, over 400 audits were carried out in Germany alone in 2013, for example.<\/p>\n
